North Chargin Nature Center & Squire’s Castle

Every year for our anniversary, my husband & I would visit Squire’s Castle in Willoughby Hills, Ohio. We would spend the day hiking around the North Chargin Reservation metro park then visit the castle for a picnic.
North Chagrin Reservation has outdoor recreation areas and wildlife sanctuaries.

The Nature Center overlooks Sanctuary Marsh, where native plants create a wetland community. Marsh wildflowers bloom throughout the spring and summer that you see view while walking on the 300-foot boardwalk. Nearby, Sunset Pond is known throughout the area as a home for Water fowl. The trails surrounding North Chagrin Nature Center are paved for visitors.

Squire’s Castle was built by F.B. Squire in the 1890’s. It was suppose to be the gate house for an estate that was never built. It’s located in the North Chagrin Reservation of the Cleveland Metro parks. Squire sold the property in 1922 and the metro parks acquired it in 1925.

Today Squire’s Castle is open to the public free-of-admission. The castle contains a sense of mystery. It is purportedly haunted by Squire’s wife, Rebecca. The surrounding park offers hiking & riding trails, picnic areas, and a large grassy field.

Please visit Cleveland Metroparks to learn more & plan your visit.
